Plastics in the Marine Environment

چکیده

“If all the plastic had been made with oxo-biodegradable technology there would be no ocean plastic garbage patches. ” In the 2012 study published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin “Occurrence of micro-plastics in gastrointestinal tracts of pelagic and demersal fish from the English Channel” it was shown that the majority of plastic particles consumed by the fish were rayon (57.8%) and polyester fibres. These are derived from clothes, hygiene products and nappies.

Microplastics in marine life – precautionary principle urges action

Allow the precautionary principle to be paramount in achieving Good Environmental Status in accordance with the Marine Directive. Because plastics and highly persistent chemicals take a very long time to degrade, the problem is largely irreversible once it has been detected. Synthetic polymers in the marine environment: a rapidly increasing, long-term threat.

Synthetic polymers, commonly known as plastics, have been entering the marine environment in quantities paralleling their level of production over the last half century. However, in the last two decades of the 20th Century, the deposition rate accelerated past the rate of production, and plastics are now one of the most common and persistent pollutants in ocean waters and beaches worldwide. Thi...

Study of Micro-plastic contamination in five species of prevailing fishes of Chabahar Bay, (Sistan and Baluchestan Province)

The global demand for plastics is increasing due to it wide applications. About 60 to 80 percent of the waste of the marine environment belong to plastic class. There is a lack of information and research on the presence of plastic and micro-plastic contamination in aquatic animals, The present study, therefore examined the frequency, distribution, size, color and type of micro-plastic (MPS) in...

Plastics and microplastics in the oceans: From emerging pollutants to emerged threat.

Plastic production has increased dramatically worldwide over the last 60 years and it is nowadays recognized as a serious threat to the marine environment. Plastic pollution is ubiquitous, but quantitative estimates on the global abundance and weight of floating plastics are still limited, particularly for the Southern Hemisphere and the more remote regions. Some large-scale convergence zones o...

Microplastics as contaminants in the marine environment: a review.

Since the mass production of plastics began in the 1940s, microplastic contamination of the marine environment has been a growing problem. Here, a review of the literature has been conducted with the following objectives: (1) to summarise the properties, nomenclature and sources of microplastics; (2) to discuss the routes by which microplastics enter the marine environment; (3) to evaluate the ...
